LEGAL SAMPLE COLLECTION

For Legal DNA Test Samples Following Chain of Custody

For legal DNA testing that adheres to the Chain of Custody protocol, it is crucial to follow these guidelines:

Independent Sample Collection: An impartial sample collector, with no vested interest in the test outcome, must be present throughout the entire sample collection process. This individual will oversee and verify the proper collection of the samples.

Control of Collection Materials: Test participants are prohibited from handling any collection materials before or after the collection process.

Identification Requirements: All participants, including minors, must present valid identification and provide copies or photos of their identification along with their samples.

Court-Admissible Legal DNA Tests: These tests require either original or clear photocopies of one or both of the following documents:

  • Government-issued photo identification
  • A photograph suitable for positive identification

Immigration, Passport, VISA, and Citizenship DNA Tests: These tests require original or clear photocopies of both of the following documents:

  • Government-issued photo identification
  • A photograph suitable for positive identification

Consent and Documentation: The test participants (or their legal guardians/conservators in the case of minors or legally incompetent adults) must provide consent on the Client Identification and Consent Form.

Sample Collector Responsibilities: The sample collector is responsible for completing and signing the Client Identification and Consent Form and the sample envelopes. The test will be invalidated if the Collector Statement is not properly completed.

Secure Handling and Shipping: After the collection is finished, all materials should be securely placed in a larger envelope and sealed. The sample collector is required to send the sample collection kit to the laboratory using a trackable or traceable shipping method. The samples and accompanying paperwork must remain in the secure possession of the sample collector until they are shipped.
